Most layout studies represent connectivity by the distance between connected equipment. Kim and Roh (0000), Shin et al. (0000), and Kim and Roh (0000) use right-angle distance as the connection cost, while Kim et al. (0000) take pipe length as the objective. A step further, they work with system groups and predefined connections. Gunawan et al. (0000) partition engine room equipment into modules using a Design Structure Matrix and genetic algorithm that takes connection weight as the pipe cost. Gunawan et al. (0000) place these modules on the decks of three bulk carrier series, targeting pipe cost and inter-ship layout similarity. With this method, they reduced pipe cost by approximately 0.0-0.0% compared to the existing layout, and optimization of a single ship alone yielded savings of up to 0.00%.
